Took Rodeo out to work on loungeing on the lounge line today. Although we have been working on it, the past week or two, we have been doing it on the lead rope. I get a better response, and we werent having any issues. So I decided today, what the heck, lets do it on the actual lounge line. Perfect going to the right, and once again he would not go to the left!!! I got very frustrated with him, so I stopped, put him on the lounge line and he did it just fine?! I just dont get it. So from now on, well for a little while anyways, I will be just working on his left side. On the way back to his stall we made progress, as I had him go around me, stop, back up, and even SIDE PASS!!!! I was excited and happy with that! Rodeo will be 19months old here in about 2 weeks. Cant believe how fast time is flying by! Looks like I wont be going to the show on the 12th either as no one from my barn is going, but no biggie! Ill get to a show one of these days, Im not really in a rush for it anyways so. Anyways Happy Halloween!!!
Got an email from the BO today, saying that Rodeo seems very sluggish, and that maybe he needs a different feed. So I went out there, which I had planned to anyway, and didnt see where he was sluggish what so ever! He cantered both to the left and right on the lounge. It was obvious that he was weaker on his left, so we'll have to work on that!
I guess what happened was, he was laying flat out on his side, which he LOVES to do! And the girl working thought he was dead, went to get him up and he wasnt getting up. So she got him up, and he walked off like "Whyd you do that?" and grazed just fine. LOL!!! I then brought him out into the grooming stall. There were kids, dogs, and other horses, so I was like training experience!! He didnt bat an eye, didnt care about anything!!! I also threw a saddle on him and lounged him, he looks great in it!!!
Yesterday I noticed nasty little scabs and bumps on Rodeo, posted some pics of it, and had an alarming response that it was rain rot. Was told to put MTG on him, when I honestly have never needed before, so thats what I did today. I wormed, and put MTG on Rodeo. Took him to the arena after, and had him trot around me a few times both ways just to be sure he was still going both ways with no problems!!! There's an obstacle course coming up next month, that I am seriously considering going to! Im hoping I end up going as, I think it would be a FANTASTIC training experience for the both of us!
As far as Higher Time goes, I got an amazing transport quote of $675!!! I am shocked about the quote, and am hopeful for it, but that is for him being picked up Nov 5th. Thats not going to happen. For the most part, its starting to look like Im not going to be able to get him. Which to be honest, I want his brother, but at the same time I dont. Yes, we can afford another one, and even with board discounted and what not, its just a lot of money to put towards just boarding and what not. If I had them at my own place, I would do it in a heart beat, as I just went over the board cost vs at home cost, and I am disgusted!! I will be paying close to $5,000 a year just for board. If my calculations are correct, I would only be paying a little over $1,100 a year if I had him at my own place. Adding a second horse would double that, adding up to only $2,200 a year for upkeep. So Im a little bummed about the whole Higher Time situation. I did find a barn that was even cheaper, but it is about 35miles away, which isnt bad, but my barn now is only 11miles away so. Looking forward to going out to Rodeo next time, this weather is amazing for working him and being at the barn!!!
Nothing like cleaning your horse's stall!! I ended up cleaning it today, just been in the mood to really clean his stall, so I did :D It looks great too! After that, I gave him a good grooming, and he was EXCELLENT!!! Then I took him into the arena, snapped a few pics, and that was that! Id say hes going through a growth spurt as he is looking very lanky, and long legged!! Not sure how getting his brother is going to end up. We can afford a second horse, not that we need one, but I personally would be honored to have both Rodeo, and Higher Time! But getting him down here is the problem, we cant afford that, even if we had our own trailer, we cant afford going up there, and having to pay for gas for a 1600mile round trip! How we can afford a second horse is beyond me! Would it be tight with the money? Yes, but we can do it if we had to, but I dont think we necessarily have to, so. What ever happens, whether he ends up with us, or not, I really hope everything works out for him, as he really is a gorgeous horse!
Got off the phone with Higher Time's owner today. He is willing to give me Higher Time for free. All I would have to pay for besides upkeep, is to get him down here. He is about 800miles away from me. I would have to resort a few things, and most likely Higher Time, and Rodeo would be at different barns. Higher Time would be at a barn where board is $175, and about 30min away, and Rodeo would be at a barn where board is $225, and is 3miles away! Rodeo cant be at the other farm due to their fences arent strong enough to keep him from breaking out, and Higher Time would have to be at the cheaper one due to board being too much for 2 horses at $225. Quite confusing if you ask me. Hubby and I are going to go over things later tonight to see if this is actually do -able, and if so I may be getting a second horse soon :D
Got an email today from Higher Time's owner. Im probably going to give him a call tomorrow. From the sounds of it, he is interested in selling, or maybe even giving away Rodeo's full brother Higher Time. This would be a dream come true, as I have been trying to get Higher Time since I found that the man that bought him wasnt happy with him. Huby says there is no way we'd be able to afford it. Im going to try my hardest to get him as I would be honored to have him, as I love, love, love, love, love the cross!! Stay tuned for more!!
Went out and got Rodeo today, there was a lesson going on, which was no big deal as I didnt have a set goal for the day. I started grooming Rodeo near my car, neither of us really like being in the barn for grooming and what not, ever since I got him, I would just groom him outside, obviously when the weather is bad we go inside, but if its nice out, we try to stay outside as much as possible.
As I was just beginning, a friend came up and we started talking, we talked for about 15-20min, and Rodeo stood there like a real champ! I was beyond proud of him! He wasnt antsy, didnt try moving around, he just stood there like a good boy!! I am so happy with how he did! After that, I just turned him back out and called it a day! I so love my horse!!!
Went out and got Rodeo today. I groomed him, picked his feet, and fly sprayed him, and he just stood there like a good boy!! I am quite concerned about the whole trainer thing, heard quite a few bad things that I do not like about the trainer I went to see Sunday. So we'll see what happens with that in the long wrong.
As I was working with Rodeo on side passing, which we were actually doing by the way!!!, I saw 4-5 horses on a trail ride, and thought what a great training experience! So I started walking where I thought they might come out, and sure enough they did!! It was the guy from next door that trains horses. He and a group of his clients were going for a nice ride. He started talking about Hidalgo and how my horse was Hidalgo!! LOL
Went out to the trainer's today! I was very excited as everything is becoming so real to me! I know Rodeo still has quite a bit of time before he goes to the trainers, but its nice to kind of gauge where we are at in training. The trainer's is only 7miles away from where Rodeo is now! I cant believe that! Its too good to be true.
Anyways, we went out there, and he grabbed a horse, and started working her in the round pen, explaining what he was doing, why he was doing, and how he was able to do it. He had the horse lunge to the right, lunge to the left, back up, disengage her hind quarters, side pass, and basically really just move off of pressure. He had me go in and see if I could do it, and then go to the barn later that night to apply it to Rodeo.
So after we were done there, I went to the barn, and worked with Rodeo. And honestly, Rodeo was FANTASTIC!!! He lunged to the right and left no problem, disengaged his hindquarters, which we did to pressure from his hindquarters, but never just with the rope. We worked on backing up, and side passing. Side passing still isnt quite there, but Im confident we'll get it with more help.
I really liked the way the trainer did everything with the horses. I saw him ride as well, and he gives the horse clear signals on what he wants them to do. He doesnt force them, but actually makes it to where they want to do what he is asking! I asked if he would go out to my barn sometime to see where Rodeo and I are. SO he is coming out next Sunday the 30th. I am very excited, and confident in that Rodeo and I are just where we need to be! Basically, he wanted the horses to know what they needed to know on the ground, and then what they need to know for the future up in the saddle. And everything really made complete sense to me, so I am very pleased with everything!
Finally!!! We did it!!! I finally was successful in getting Rodeo to lounge counterclockwise!! Im so happy and excited!! I feel like we really accomplished something! Now, by now means was it out on a lounge line, I used my 12' lead, and his rope halter, and we were finally able to lounge both ways without a single problem!
As for the blog, sorry I havent been updating it everyday, I only update it, or post when I go out to the barn. I havent been out as much for a few reasons, 1)work cut my hours back, making future paychecks smaller, 2) less money means less gas money, and 3) wanted to give Rodeo and I a break from training for a few days.
He was perfect in everything we did today. I went, got him, groomed him, which he is growing his winter fuzzies already! How I love and hate his fuzzies at the same time! LOL Then we went into the arena, worked, and excelled on the lounging! After that, I went in and measured him, which it still reads 14hh. I went and measured his hip/butt as well, and that measures 14.2hh. After that, we went for a walk to the end of the driveway, wanted to see how he would react to traffic driving by at a pretty fast rate, and he did great!! I am so excited about this!
Also, this Sunday, the 23rd, I am going to the trainers to check out his place, and decide if that is where I want Rodeo to go, so come back for updates on that!!!
